Leak: AT&T outbid Verizon for iPad deal
Clayton Morris today colored in the details behind his claims of ongoing Verizon iPad talks with word of why the carrier was absent from the launch and its future plans. The Fox News reporter claims that AT&T simply “outbid” other carriers by agreeing to the $30 unlimited and $15 250MB data plans. It’s not evident what might have led Verizon to miss out on the deal, though it’s allegedly much more concerned with getting an iPhone deal than a 3G-only device like the iPad….

Apple on Monday released a firmware update for 27-inch iMacs released late last year. Confirming earlier reports, the latest download is a second firmware update designed to address issues involving intermittent display flickering. The company in December released a graphics firmware update that was also claimed to prevent image corruption and flickering, although it was reportedly unsuccessful for many users….

Apple releases another 27-inch iMac firmware update

Amid rumors that Apple has halted production of the 27-inch iMac do to display issues, Apple has released a second firmware update. The update, which is for iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) only:

Updates the display firmware on 27-inch iMac systems to address issues that may cause intermittent display flickering.

The update weighs in at 294KB and can be downloaded here or through Software Update.

The first 27-inch iMac update was released on December 21, 2009 that updated “the graphics firmware on ATI Radeon HD 4670 and 4850 graphics cards to address issues that may cause image corruption or display flickering.”

Talk of a Mac Pro with six-core Xeons gained support Tuesday with rumors that Apple could launch the workstation ahead of Intel’s own news. Although Intel wouldn’t launch the Gulftown architecture processors until March, Apple is suspected by MacBidouille of having the option of using new Xeons anywhere from within a few days to 15 days of Intel’s wider release, opening the door to a launch between mid-February and early March….

Remove a Stripped Screw with a Rubber Band [MacGyver Tip]

The head of the screw you stripped while you were hanging that shelf may not have seemed like a big deal at the time—until you needed to unscrew it, that is. Next time you’re having trouble, try a rubber band.

Home hacks and design blog Apartment Therapy offers a a few simple, smart tips for removing a stripped screw without any special equipment like an extractor—like using a rubber band:

A rubber band may aid in providing enough grip to remove, or at least loosen, the screw. Place a wide band rubber band inbetween the screw driver (we recommend bumping one size up from the screw head which caused the strip) and the screw, then apply hard, but slow force as you turn. If you’re fortunate, the rubber band will fill in the gaps caused by the strip and allow extraction.

They also suggest more obvious solutions like changing the size of your screwdriver, using a pliers when possible, or just pounding the screwdriver into the screw head with a hammer, hoping you can create your own traction. If you’ve ever tried the rubber band trick—or have your own favorite method—let’s hear how it worked in the comments. If your screw’s just fine but your screw hole is stripped, a golf tee may be all you need.

This looks like it may be more of a price war than an official price drop, but anyone in the market for a Zune HD may one to pay a visit to Amazon or Newegg fairly soon, as they’re now both selling the device for what appears to be the lowest price yet. While there’s no telling how long it’ll last, you can now snag a black 16GB Zune HD for $189.99 ($30 off the MSRP), or a 32GB Platinum Zune HD for $249.99 (a discount of $40). As of this writing, most other retailers seem to be offering nothing more than $20 discounts, though we have a suspicion that may change in the near future.

New iPhone, iPod codenames surface in code
A new set of clues to Apple’s future handhelds have been revealed today through a search of recent code. The iPhone 3.2 SDK used to write for the iPad includes references in the simulator’s library to N89, a previously unknown device. Reportedly “trustworthy” contacts for Engadget claim the number is the codename for the next iPhone, just as the M68, N82 and N88 were the respective codenames for the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the 3GS….

Omni Group bringing the Omni apps to the iPad

Famed OmniFocus developer The Omni Group has given a brief peak at their development roadmap. The Mac Observer reports that Omni will release OmniFocus, OmniPlan, OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner and OmniGraphSketcher for the iPad.

The Omni Group is pretty excited about what all the iPad has to offer saying they feel that, like the original Macintosh, the iPad will be the computer for the rest of us. Omni has already begun porting OmniFocus and OmniGraffle for the iPad and will start working to bring their other products to iPad beginning in the next few months.

Omni is being very candid about their plans for the future of their products and it is refreshing to see a well-known software company keep their users informed. Omni admits that the iPad work will delay future release cycles for the Mac versions of their software but is confident that this is the right decision.
